Zoals op wel meer plekken in de arbeidersstad Meriënborg wordt op dit oude stadsplein eer gegeven aan een historisch figuur van Sovjet-afkomst; een fors standbeeld van Yuri Alekseyevich Gagarin herdenkt de prestatie van deze Rus die in 1961 als eerste mens de ruimte bereikte. Ondanks wisselende politieke opvattingen blijft Meriënborg vandaag de dag nog altijd sterk verbonden met het voormalig Oostblok.
